46.Adelaide contains many fine examples of early Australian architecture, including the town hall on King William Street—the wide main N-S thoroughfare.Built from designs by E.W.Wright, a former mayor of the city, the town hall’s foundation stone was laid in 1863.
The city contains many statues seven fountains.The most spectacular fountain, completed in 1968, is in Victoria Square, the centre of the city’s business section.Its three-sided design, with 34 jets of water aluminium sculptures, represents the three rivers from which Adelaide draws its water—the Murray (墨累河), the Torrens (托伦斯河) the Onkaparinga (昂卡帕令加河).Parklands, which separate the city the suburbs, are preserved in perpetuity for the use of the people.
From 1960, when the first Adelaide Festival of Arts was held, Adelaide gained a reputation as Australia’s cultural centre.As an artistic event, a stimulus to the creative performing arts in Australia, the Festival has introduced many world-famous artists to millions of Australians.
