24.A lawyer friend of mine has devoted herself to the service of humanity. Her special area is called"public interest law". Many other lawyers represent only clients who can pay high fees. All lawyers have had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult hours for the money they earn. But what happens to people who need legal help and cannot afford to pay these lawyers' fees? Public interest lawyers fill this need. Lisa , like other public interest lawyers, earns a salary much below what some lawyers can earn.Because she is willing to take less money, her clients need the help, even if they can pay nothing at all. Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with faulty merchandise. Others are in unsafe apartments, or are threatened with eviction (驱逐,赶出 )and have no place to go to. Their cases are called "civil" cases. Still others are accused of criminal acts, and seeking those public interest lawyers who handle "criminal" cases. These are just a few of the many situations in which men and women who are public interest lawyers serve to extend justice throughout our society.24.1 A person who needs and uses legal help is called a _____.A.lawyerB.clientC.tenantD.case worker
23.There is a difference between science and technology.Science is a method of answering theoretical questions;technology is a method of solving practical problem.Science has to do with the facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships;technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for implementing the finding of science.Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progress in each.Progress in science excludes the human factor.Scientists, who seek to comprehend the universe and know the truth with the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people's likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or anger people-as did Darwin's theory of evolution. But even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful;besides,we have the choice of refusing to believe it!But it's hardly so with technology and we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft flying overhead;we do not have the choice of refusing to breathe polluted air;and we do not have the choice of living in a non-atomic age.Unlike science progress, technology must be measured in terms of the human factor. The legitimate purpose of technology is to serve people in general, not merely some people;and future generantions, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves.Technology must be humanistic if it is to lead to a better world.(10分)23.1 Which of the following statements about science is NOT true?(2分)A. 23.It was the tail end of the depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My Dad had drowned in PittLake, five years earlier. Because Dad had no pension, or benefits, there was not much money so we went on relief. Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar Christmas fund for social services. The Inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn't find any, he issued the cheque for Mum. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas. Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. My mind was made up and I realized what I had to do. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store called the Piggly Wiggley. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I realized that the twenty-five dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. I quietly unloaded the groceries on the porch and piled them against the door, then I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother's face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there dumbfounded. Holding back the tears, I hollered, “Merry Christmas Mother!! There really is a Santa Claus!”(10分)23.1 What happened to my father?(2分)A. He deserted us five years ago.B. He left Pitt Lake five years ago.C. He left Pitt Lake five years ago.D. 22. Man lives in communities. His social existence restricts his flexibility in certain directions and extends it in others. Society imposes on him some limitations. People do not all engage in the same activities. They can be differentiated from each other by the functions they perform. This process of differentiation is called specialization. Specialization prevents many members of an industrial society from developing intelligence and initiative. However, some careers in these societies demand a high degree of intelligence and initiative. And there are some aspects of human society itself which encourage the development of such powers, indeed extend them beyond a point which can be attained by animals or animal communities lacking the features which human society uniquely possesses.Western-type democracies often claim that they provide "equality of opportunity" for all their citizens. At first sight it might seem that this implies the same chance for everyone of succeeding in his preferred occupation provided he is conscious of his goal and is willing to work hard; in other words, a situation in which rewards depend only on desire and effort. What the phrase actually implies is, of course, something rather different -- namely a competitive situation in which the number of competitors exceeds the number of rewards, though all competitors have the same "chance" because they all start the race from the same base line. However, it is only in theory that they all start equal. Even if the state offers them free education and protects them from hunger or extreme poverty, many citizens are disadvantaged in practice by their background, their upbringing, and probably other factors such as their sex or color. A process of invisible or hidden selection goes on which has very little to do with "equality of opportunity" in any sense. It is not the individual who selects his job; it is the system of society with its specialized requirements which selects the individuals who fit its requirements.(10分)22.1 Specialization is necessary because____.A. man is not as capable as machines in doing some thingsB. few people can develop all-round skillsC. different social members take part in different activitiesD. more and more machines are taking the place of men
