4. British Columbia is the third largest Canadian province, both in area and population. It is nearly 1 1/2 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles (1,280 km) north from the United States' border. It includes Canada's entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long, rugged (崎岖的) ranges running north and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured (冲刷) by glaciers (冰河) until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now show as islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds also carry moisture from the ocean.Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500 cm) of rain fall each year.More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs (冷杉) rise in towering columns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet (90 m) tall, with diameters up to 10 feet (3 m). More lumber is produced from these trees than from any other kind of trees in North America. Hemlock (铁杉), red cedar (雪松), and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia.36. With which aspect of British Columbia is the passage primarily concerned?____A. Its people.B. Its culture.C. Its geography.D. Its history.

22.Connection is a powerful tool helping you learn better. Using connection, you need to take information and connect it to images, examples and things you already understan However, as a skill, this takes some time to develop and it often fails when you face very hard material, and it can also be misapplied, particularly if it’s used as a direct replacement for practice. Here are some ways I’ve used it:While learning Chinese, I would recognize the radicals (部首)of the characters and try to form a mental picture either with those radicals or the character meaning or the pronunciation, or all three. While studying international business law in France, I used the link and peg (挂钩)method to link the date and place of a particular treaty(协约)which was signed to the name of the treaty. While studying accounting, when I couldn’t remember a rule, I’d make a mental image that encapsulated (概述)it. While learning biology, whenever I couldn’t remember a chemical, I made a list of its properties (性能),turned those properties into images and linked that to the way the name sounds. When you’re trying to memorize a lot of information that isn’t well connected, focus on quick and loose images that will help you translate the information, even if they don’t represent it well.(10分)22.1 What the author is talking about in this passage is .(2分)A. a tool which helps you do reading betterB. a method which helps you learn betterC. a tool which helps you do accounting betterD. a method which helps you do chemical experiment better参考答案:B

3. In the early 1600's, a group known as the Separatists lived in England. They were people who wanted to worship God, study the Bible and pray, but the English laws did not allow them to worship as they desired. They were hunted down, beaten, and locked up.Eventually, they heard about freedom of religion in Holland, and planned to escape. After much hardship, they were allowed to leave England. Now called Pilgrims, they lived in Holland for 12 years, but left because they couldn't stand the hard life, and couldn't work their own trades. They wanted to find a Kingdom of God for their posterity (后代) to practice religion freely. So they hired the Speedwell and the Mayflower to carry them across the Atlantic to a new land in America. The Speedwell had many leaks and had to turn back. The Mayflower took in their passengers, making a total of over 100. They sailed two months and three days, cramped and hungry. On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower spotted land. They landed in Province town, Massachusetts. For over a month, they sent men to find the perfect place for them to build their colony. When they finally found a place, they called it Plymouth.Right away they started building homes, knowing winter was near.Unfortunately, a violent storm hit when the houses were not yet finished. The Pilgrims were forced to stay on the cramped (狭窄的) Mayflower for their first winter in the new world. When this winter was over, over half of them had died. The Pilgrims eventually made a good friend who helped them. His name was Squanto. He showed them where fish swam, how to hunt deer, and how to plant corn.Squanto was a Native American who was kidnapped (绑架) earlier in his life and taken to England. This is why he was able to communicate with the Pilgrims. With the help of the Native Americans, there was plenty for everyone to eat that first summer, and also plenty to last for the next winter. The Pilgrims had so much to be thankful for. They gave thanks for good friends, new homes, freedom of religion, and plenty of food in a three-day celebration with their Native American friends.Today we continue the celebration of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans, and call it Thanksgiving.(5分)3.1 The Separatists left England in pursuit of____.(1分)A. wealthB. adventureC. an easier lifeD. religious freedom

2. Although breast cancer is one of the most funded areas of cancer research, it is also one of the most confusing. It benefits from very high charitable donations, but suffers from overlapping research, over underfunding of programs, uneven disbursement (支出款项) duplicate research funded programs that do not interact or interface.Approximately one third of all monies allocated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for research go to breast cancer, with $631 billion dollars allocated in 2010 alone. The American Cancer Society commits close to 40 percent of its budget on breast cancer, $391 million dollars between 1992 2010, Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has donated $700 million the Susan Komen for the Cure has donated $420 million. Many other programs also provide funding, raising the annual breast cancer budget to about one billion dollars annually. Despite this huge investment, however, 59,000 women will die from breast cancer in North America alone this year.Research so far has failed to understwhat causes the five or six different types of breast cancer. They know about the BRCA 1 BRCA 2 genes, but otherwise lack information on the causes. Many breast cancer programs emphasize education. The Susan Komen Crusade, for example, allocates only five percent of its total budget on treatment, while 43 percent goes to education. If the cause of breast cancer is unknown, what is the purpose of education other than trumpeting mammograms as a means of early detection?
