23. Love really is blind when it comes to physical flaws, it would seem. A research conducted by Social studies Center in University of Hawaii at Manoa suggests that when we love someone, we tend to overlook their crooked noses, big tummies or other attributes that might put others off. As a result, husbands and wives think their other halves are more attractive than they really are. No wonder Chinese has the saying that “Beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes”. This phenomenon could also help explain some physically mis-matched couples such as the glamorous Beyonce and Jay-Z, the striking Lara Stone and David Walliams. The so-called “positive illusion” theory comes from an experiment in which researchers asked 70 couples to rate their other halves for attractiveness. Questions included how attractive their husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend was to the opposite sex, and how they rated compared with others of the same age. The answers were kept secret to prevent any partners from being upset and distressed. Some of those taking part also rated photos of their partners. In addition, members of the public judged the looks of all 140 men and women taking part. The results revealed that couples view their other halves as being better looking than they really are. Even asking them to rate pictures of their partners did not give them a reality check, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships reports. With previous studies finding that we view our loved ones as being kinder and more intelligent than they actually are, it does seem that love is blind in all sorts of ways. Those studied were young and had been together on average for just two and a half years. The researchers said that more work was needed to see if those in long marriages were still blind to their partner’s physical flaws. 23.The dog has always been considered man’s best friend. Always noted for being particularly faithful in watching over children, he also has his place by the fireside, in the cow pasture (牧场), on the sheep range, and beside the hunter in forest or the blind. He is easy to train, works hard, and often performs wonderfully. And in the frozen polar regions he was once the principal motive power, before being largely displaced by the plane and helicopter.Because he howls (吼叫) in the presence of approaching death, the dog was once thought to have supernatural powers and believed to be capable of seeing gods and ghosts invisible to people. Actually, the basis for these beliefs lies in the dog’s sensitivity to people’s feelings and his superior hearing ability and sense of smell, which enable him to detect signs hidden from human observation. His record of saving lives is outstanding, for he often gives warnings of fire and other dangers not noticed by his master. The dog’s major contribution, however, has been to medical research. Both his food and his structure are comparable to those of human beings, and so he has been the subject of countless demonstrations and experiments. Open-heart operation has been made possible largely because of the dog. But his sacrifice has repaid his own species as well by safeguarding it from rabies (狂犬病), and other serious diseases.(10分)23.1 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?(2分)A. “I’m not 100% convinced that memorizing the dictionary is the best way of improving your vocabulary,”says the character played by Hugh Grant in Woody Allen’s film Small Time Crooks.Yet why not?If you could memorize the dictionary -or even the 5,000 most words in that dictionary - wouldn’t that give you a huge advantage?1.Researchers estimate that a core vocabulary of between 2,000 3,000 high-frequency words is probably enough to push learners over the intermedisate plateau(停滞阶段).So why don’t we insist on them memorizing these words, form day one,as quickly as possible?2.As an example,a New Zealfriend of mine who studied Maori(毛利语)asked me recently what I,as a language teacher, would make of his teacher’s method:”We just do masses of words around theme, for example, family pf food.We have to learn these words before the next lesson, the we come back have a conversation about family of food ect, using these words. The teacher feeds in the grammar that we need to stick the words together.”He added that he thought the method worked a treat.Neverthless,3.for most teachers learners the sheer spadework involved in memorizing lists of words doesn’t make for very exciting teaching.More importantly, knowing a word invovles much more than simply having memorized. It is readily accessible? Is it there when you need to say it?As Hotspur says (in response to Glendower’s boast that he “can call spirits from the vasty deep”),”why ,so can I.or so can any man,but will they come when you do call for them?”4.Memorization of words without frequently opportunities to access them is probably time misspent.Yet memory is important - perhaps the most important task facing the learner.5.therefore knowing how memory works, how to make it work to learner’s advantage,is a major responsibility for teacher’s.So how does memory work, what implications might these working have on the teaching of vocabulary?(20分)
