23.It was the tail end of the depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My Dad had drowned in PittLake, five years earlier. Because Dad had no pension, or benefits, there was not much money so we went on relief. Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar Christmas fund for social services. The Inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn't find any, he issued the cheque for Mum. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas. Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. My mind was made up and I realized what I had to do. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store called the Piggly Wiggley. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I realized that the twenty-five dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. I quietly unloaded the groceries on the porch and piled them against the door, then I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother's face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there dumbfounded. Holding back the tears, I hollered, “Merry Christmas Mother!! There really is a Santa Claus!”(10分)23.1 What happened to my father?(2分)A. He deserted us five years ago.B. He left Pitt Lake five years ago.C. He left Pitt Lake five years ago.D. 22.Connection is a powerful tool helping you learn better. Using connection, you need to take information and connect it to images, examples and things you already understan However, as a skill, this takes some time to develop and it often fails when you face very hard material, and it can also be misapplied, particularly if it’s used as a direct replacement for practice. Here are some ways I’ve used it:While learning Chinese, I would recognize the radicals (部首)of the characters and try to form a mental picture either with those radicals or the character meaning or the pronunciation, or all three. While studying international business law in France, I used the link and peg (挂钩)method to link the date and place of a particular treaty(协约)which was signed to the name of the treaty. While studying accounting, when I couldn’t remember a rule, I’d make a mental image that encapsulated (概述)it. While learning biology, whenever I couldn’t remember a chemical, I made a list of its properties (性能),turned those properties into images and linked that to the way the name sounds. When you’re trying to memorize a lot of information that isn’t well connected, focus on quick and loose images that will help you translate the information, even if they don’t represent it well.(10分)22.1 What the author is talking about in this passage is .(2分)A. a tool which helps you do reading betterB. a method which helps you learn betterC. a tool which helps you do accounting betterD. a method which helps you do chemical experiment better参考答案:B

4. British Columbia is the third largest Canadian province, both in area and population. It is nearly 1 1/2 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles (1,280 km) north from the United States' border. It includes Canada's entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long, rugged (崎岖的) ranges running north and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured (冲刷) by glaciers (冰河) until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now show as islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds also carry moisture from the ocean.Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500 cm) of rain fall each year.More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs (冷杉) rise in towering columns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet (90 m) tall, with diameters up to 10 feet (3 m). More lumber is produced from these trees than from any other kind of trees in North America. Hemlock (铁杉), red cedar (雪松), and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia.36. With which aspect of British Columbia is the passage primarily concerned?____A. Its people. B. Its culture. C. Its geography. D. Its history.
