4.Fifty volunteers were alphabetically divided into two equal groups, Group A to participate in a 7 week exercise program, and Group B to avoid deliberate exercise of any sort during those 7 weeks. On the day before the exercise program began, all 50 men participated in a step-test. This consisted of stepping up and down on a 16-inch bench at 30 steps a minute for 5 minutes. One minute after completion of the step-test, the pulse rate of each subject was taken had recorded. This served as the pretest for the experiment. For the next 7 weeks, subjects in the experimental group (Group A) rode an Exercycle (a motor-driven bicycle-type exercise machine) for 15 minutes each day. The exercise schedule called for riders to ride relaxed during the first day's ride, merely holding on to the handle bars and foot pedals as the machine moved. Then, for the next 3 days, they rode relaxed for 50 seconds of each minute, and pushed, pulled, and pedaled actively for 10 seconds of each minute. The ratio of active riding was increased every few days, so that by the third week it was half of each minute, and by the seventh week the riders were performing 15 solid minutes of active riding. At the end of the 7 weeks, the step-test was again given to both groups of subjects, and their pulses were taken. The post-exercise pulse rates of subjects in the experimental group were found to have decreased an average of 30 heart beats per minute, with the lowest decrease 28 and the highest decrease 46. The pulse rates of subjects in the control group remained the same or changed no more than 4 beats, with an average difference between the initial and final tests of zero.(5分)4.1How many people were in each group?____(1分)A. 100.B. 50.C. 25. 24.A lawyer friend of mine has devoted herself to the service of humanity. Her special area is called"public interest law". Many other lawyers represent only clients who can pay high fees. All lawyers have had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult hours for the money they earn. But what happens to people who need legal help and cannot afford to pay these lawyers' fees? Public interest lawyers fill this need. Lisa , like other public interest lawyers, earns a salary much below what some lawyers can earn.Because she is willing to take less money, her clients need the help, even if they can pay nothing at all. Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with faulty merchandise. Others are in unsafe apartments, or are threatened with eviction (驱逐,赶出 )and have no place to go to. Their cases are called "civil" cases. Still others are accused of criminal acts, and seeking those public interest lawyers who handle "criminal" cases. These are just a few of the many situations in which men and women who are public interest lawyers serve to extend justice throughout our society.24.1 A person who needs and uses legal help is called a _____.A.lawyerB.clientC.tenantD.case worker
John Rogers, an American businessman likes to tell a story of visiting his company’s Chinese suppliers. “The previous year my company had proudly sent all its colleagues around the world some beautiful desk clocks. But when I arrived in Shanghai, I found my Chinese colleagues were upset with the gift. The reason is that the phrase “give a clock” in Chinese sounds like the phrase for “make a funeral arrangement” (meaning death). It was a symbol of the end of our relationship.” This tale shows 1.how important it is today to understcorrect gift-giving behavior around the world. 2.“Gifts are an important part of developing strong relationships with clients”, says Rogers. Business often depends on individual relationships built on trust a gift symbolizes this. But giving the wrong gift can make relations worse. So what is an appropriate thoughtful gift? Rogers says that 3. anything from your home country that is difficult to get elsewhere would be good. When to give the gift also depends on your culture. 4. Westerners usually give gifts when they meet each other but in Eastern cultures it is more usual to give gifts when you leave. There may also be special holiday times when gift-giving is expected. Gift-giving customs vary from country to country so it is difficult to be correct in every situation. But 5. if you learn the general rules do a bit of research on the customs of the places you will visit you will not go too far wrong. As John Rogers says, “I remember the country’s religious customs, I avoid giving things that are not appropriate or considered strange I choose the wrapping paper carefully. This shows people I have thought about the gift they always seem to appreciate the effort I have made.”(20分)
