24. Intricately intertwined with(与……错综交织) self-esteem and inhibition and risk-taking, the construct of anxiety, as it has been studied in the psychological domain(领域), plays an important affective role in second language acquisition. Anxiety is almost impossible to define in a simple sentence. It is associated with feelings of uneasiness, frustration, self-doubt, apprehension(恐惧), or worry. Scovel defined anxiety as “state of apprehension, or vague fear…” We all know what anxiety is and we all have experienced feelings of anxiousness. How does this construct relate to second language learning? Any complex task we undertake can have elements of anxiety in it, aspects in which we doubt our own abilities and wonder if we will indeed succeed. Second language learning is no exception to a long list of complex tasks that are susceptible(易受感染的) to our human anxieties. The research on anxiety suggests that, like self-esteem, anxiety can be experienced at various levels. At the deepest, or global level, trait anxiety is a more permanent predisposition(倾向) to be anxious. Some people are predictably and generally anxious about many things. At a more momentary, or situational level, state anxiety is experienced in relation to some particular event or act. As we learned in the case of self-esteem, then, it is important in a classroom for a teacher to try to determine whether a student’s anxiety stems from a more global trait or whether it comes from a particular situation at the moment.Trait anxiety, because of its global and somewhat ambiguously defined nature, has not proved to be useful in predicting second language achievement. However, recent research on foreign language anxiety, as it has come to be known, focuses more specifically on the situational nature of state anxiety.(10分)24.1 The passage mainly talks about ______.(2分)A. anxietyB. inhibitionC. risk-takingD. self-esteem
24.The earliest process of making paper was done almost five thousand years ago in Egypt and the Nile Valley. In those days, paper was made from strips of the papyrus plant. Modern paper-making began in China about two thousand years ago. This process produced paper from cloth, straw, wood or the bark of trees. The raw materials are struck over and over until they become loose. Then they are mixed with water. After the water has been removed, the flat, thin form remaining is permitted to dry. This becomes a sheet of paper.Large machines started to be used for making paper near the end of the sixteenth century. Today, paper-making is a big business. But it is still possible to make paper by hand, since the steps are the same as using big machines. You should choose paper with small amounts of printing. Old envelopes are good for this reason. Colored paper also can be used, as well as small amounts of newspaper. Small pieces of rags or cloth can be added. These should be cut into pieces about five centimeters by five centimeters.Everything is placed in a container, covered with water and brought to a boil. It is mixed for about two hours with some common chemicals and then allowed to cool. Then it is left until most of the water dries up. The substance left, called pulp, can be stored until you are ready to make paper. When you are ready, the pulp is mixed with water again. Then the pulp is poured into a mold. The mold is made of small squares of wire that hold the shape and thickness of the paper. To help dry the paper, the mold lets the water flow through the small wire squares. After several more drying steps, the paper is carefully lifted back from the mold. It is now strong enough to be touched. The paper is smoothed and pressed to remove trapped air. You can use a common electric iron used for pressing clothes.(10分)24.1 According to this passage, the earliest paper was made by ______.(2分)A. Chinese peopleB. Roman peopleC. Indian peopleD. Egyptian people
22. Urban growth, also known as urbanization (城市化),sped up dramatically with the coming of industrialization some 200 years ago. At that time, large numbers of people moved to cities in search of jobs, mostly in factories. But the most rapid growth has taken place over the past 50 years. While less than one-third of the world’s population lived in cities in 1950, about two thirds of humanity is expected to live in urban areas by 2030.Urban is defined as “that which is characteristic of a city.” But what exactly is a city? In the past, walls may have defined a city. But today’s city boundaries are often unclear. Are suburbs parts of cities? Depending on the boundaries used, Tokyo can have a population of anywhere between 8 and 40 million people.Cities make a lot of sense for humans. People are concentrated in a small space rather than being spread out over a large territory. This allows the government and others to provide more service such as water, electricity, and transportation to a larger number of people. Schools and shops are more easily accessible than in rural areas.Cities have always been at the center of economic growth and technological advances. The promise of jobs and prosperity pulls people to cities. But their rapid growth has also brought with it many negative things: violence, poverty, overcrowding, health problems, and pollution. Many cities in developing countries in particular are growing too rapidly for their own good, with many residents unable to find jobs and forced to live in slums.(10分)22.1 About years ago, people left for cities to find .(2分)A. foodB. clothesC. jobs D. factories

24.Cars are an important part of life in th United States.Without a car, most people feel that they are poor.An even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car.Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn't know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the Unite States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States.First of all,the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it.The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money. The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation.Long-distance have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world.Nowadays, there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular.Americans don't like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule.A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car,one that does not use so much gas.(10分)24.1 When do most Americans feel they are poor?(2分)A. When they don't have a carB. When they live in a huge countryC. When they don't planes.D. When they have a car
