Yet two studies suggest that the clothes womn by teachers make a difference in how students see and respond to them.In one study, the researchers wanted to know if teachers would be viewed differently depending on the clothes they wore. They had teachers dress in three different styles: professional, casual professional, or casual. It was found that students' judgment of the teachers' expertise (专门知识) decreased as clothes became more casual. On the other hand, the teachers who dressed casually were seen as more interesting, out-going (开朗的) and friendly. In another study, the researchers asked students to complete surveys about their teachers' clothing. The students also answered questions about their views of their teachers, what they leamed from their courses and their own classroom behavior. The results showed a close link between teachers' clothing and the ratings students gave them. Students also reported that they behaved better and leamed more when the teachers dressed formally. The results suggest some clothing strategies for teachers. If the goal is to appear capable and maintain order, it is a good idea to dress formally. If the goal is to be viewed as out-going and friendly, casual clothing might be a better choice. The best approach might be to match clothes with the educational goals of the class.
Passage Two Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. Among the few scientists who have had a great effect on science and history, Albert Einstein is perhaps the greatest. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new view of the universe. His theory has completely changed the way scientists understand time and space. Now, more and more people agree that the universe is something complicated than what they have ever thought before. Einstein was born is Germany in 1879. By 1914, young Einstein, already internationally famous, became a professor at an institute in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study. However, his peaceful life was soon broken by the First World War. Einstein hated violence. He was deeply affected by the war; he sat unhappily in his office doing little and lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work. In the years following the First World War, people showered honors upon him. He became the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Noble Prize for Physics and was greatly honored and respected in Germany. However, his life was again disrupted. The Second World War broke out and Einstein had to move to the US, where he lived until his death in 1955.
They _____(arrive) earlier if there had been no storm.
I discovered the worth of super-slow(超慢速) reading years ago. Formerly, if I had been really interested in a book, I would race from page to page, eager to know what came next. Now, I decided,I had to become a miser(吝啬者)with words stretch every sentence like a poor man spending his last dollar. I had started with the practical object of making my book last. But by the end of the second week I began to realize now much I was getting from super-slow reading itself. Sometimes just a particular phrase caught my attention, sometimes a sentence. I would read it slowly, analyze it, read it again, then sit for twenty minutes thinking about it before moving on. I was like a pianist studying a piece of music, phrase by phrase, rehearsing(排练) it, trying to discover recreate exactly what the composer was trying to convey.
