23. Love really is blind when it comes to physical flaws, it would seem. A research conducted by Social studies Center in University of Hawaii at Manoa suggests that when we love someone, we tend to overlook their crooked noses, big tummies or other attributes that might put others off. As a result, husbands and wives think their other halves are more attractive than they really are. No wonder Chinese has the saying that “Beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes”. This phenomenon could also help explain some physically mis-matched couples such as the glamorous Beyonce and Jay-Z, the striking Lara Stone and David Walliams. The so-called “positive illusion” theory comes from an experiment in which researchers asked 70 couples to rate their other halves for attractiveness. Questions included how attractive their husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend was to the opposite sex, and how they rated compared with others of the same age. The answers were kept secret to prevent any partners from being upset and distressed. Some of those taking part also rated photos of their partners. In addition, members of the public judged the looks of all 140 men and women taking part. The results revealed that couples view their other halves as being better looking than they really are. Even asking them to rate pictures of their partners did not give them a reality check, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships reports. With previous studies finding that we view our loved ones as being kinder and more intelligent than they actually are, it does seem that love is blind in all sorts of ways. Those studied were young and had been together on average for just two and a half years. The researchers said that more work was needed to see if those in long marriages were still blind to their partner’s physical flaws. 2. ResourcesCanBe said toBe scarce inBothAnAbsoluteAnd relative sense: the surface of the Earth is finite, imposingAbsolute scarcity; But the scarcity thatConcerns economists is the relative scarcity of resources inDifferent uses. Materials used for one purposeCannotAt the same timeBe used for other purposes; if the quantity ofAn input is limited, the increased use of it in one manufacturing process mustCause it toBecome lessAvailable for other uses.TheCost ofA product in terms of money may not measure its trueCost to society. The trueCost of, say, theConstruction ofA supersonic jet is the value of the schoolsAnd refrigerators that will neverBeBuiltAsA result. EveryAct of production uses up some of society’sAvailable resources; it means the foregoing ofAn opportunity to produce something else. InDeciding how to use resources most effectively to satisfy the wants of theCommunity, this opportunityCost must ultimatelyBe taken intoAccount.InA market economy the price ofA goodAnd the quantity suppliedDepend on theCost of making it,And thatCost, ultimately, is theCost of not making other goods. The market mechanism enforces this relationship. TheCost of, say,A pair of shoes is the price of the leather, the labor, the fuel,And other elements used up in producing them. But the price of these inputs, in turn,Depends on what theyCan produce elsewhere—if the leatherCanBe used to produce handbags thatAre valued highlyByConsumers, the prices of leather willBeBid upCorrespondingly.26. WhatDoes this passage mainlyDiscuss?____A. The scarcity of manufactured goods.B. The value of scarce materials.C. The manufacturing of scarce goods.D. TheCost of producing shoes.

In 1950, theBritish mathematicianAndComputer pioneerAlan TuringDeclared that oneDay there wouldBeA machine thatDuplicate human intelligence in every wayAnd prove itBy passingA specialized test. In this test,AComputerAndA human hidden from view wouldBeAsked random identical questions, if theComputer were successful; the questioner wouldBe unable toDistinguish the machine from the personBy theAnswers.InspiredBy Turing's theory, the firstConference onAIConvenedAtDartmouthCollege in New Hampshire in 1956. SoonAfterwardsAnAI laboratory was startedAt Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyBy John McCarthyAnd Marvin Minsky, two of the nation's leadingAI proponents. McCarthyAlso invented theAIComputer language, Lisp;ButBy the early 1990sAI itself had notBeenAchieved. However, logic programsCalled expert systemsAllowComputers to "make,Decisions"By interpretingDataAnd selecting fromAmongAlternatives. TechniciansCan run programs used inComplex medicalDiagnosis, language translation, mineral exploration,And evenComputerDesign.MachineryCan outperform humans physically. So, too,CanComputers outperform mental functions in limitedAreas--notably in the speed of mathematicalCalculations. For example, the fastestComputersDevelopedAreAble to perform roughly 10BillionCalculations per second. But making more powerfulComputers will probably notBe the way toCreateA machineCapable of passing the Turing test.Computer programs operateAccording to set procedures, or logic steps,CalledAlgorithms (算法). InAddition, mostComputersDo serial processing: operations of recognitionAndComputationAre performed oneAtA time. TheBrain works inA mannerCalled parallel processing, performing operations simultaneously. ToAchieve simulated (模拟) parallel processing, some supercomputers haveBeen made with multiple processors to follow severalAlgorithmsAt the same time.Critics of thisApproach insist that solvingAComputationDoes not indicate understanding, somethingA person who solvedA problem would have. Human reasoning is notBased solely on rules of logic. It involves perception,Awareness, emotional preferences, values, evaluating experience, theAbility to generalizeAnd weigh options,And more. Some proponents ofA1 have, therefore, suggested thatComputers shouldBe patternedAfter the humanBrain, which essentiallyConsists ofA network of nerveCells.By the early 1990s, theClosestApproximation toAI wasA special siliconChipBuilt toBehave likeA humanBrainCell. It was modeledAfter the internal workings of neurons in the humanCerebralContext. Unlike theConventional silicon ship, which works inDigital mode, the new siliconChip works inAnalog mode, much the wayA humanBrainCell works.21. According to Turing,AComputerCan prove to have human-like intelligence inA special test if____A. theComputer givesBetterAnswersB. the questioner fails to give identical questionsC. the questionerCan't tellBetween theAnswers ofA personAndAComputerD.
