21. The sun sends out huge amounts of energy, not only to Earth, but to all other planets in the solar system and directly into space. The source of all that energy is nuclear fusion (核聚变) occurring at the sun’s core. The Large Helical Device being developed at the Ministry of Educational Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) is essentially an “artificial sun” that aims to reproduce this nuclear fusion on Earth. “Nuclear fusion is a reaction in which nuclei of light atoms such as hydrogen combine to form nuclei of heavier atoms such as helium (氦). If we can utilize the huge amounts of energy released by this reaction, nuclear fusion will then constitute a completely new, clean and never ending source of energy,” says NIFS Director Atsui Iiyoshl. In many respects, fusion is far superior to the various conventional energy sources currently in use. Fusion seems to have tremendous potential as a new source of energy. But to produce fusion reactions on Earth, it is necessary to meet a set of critical plasmatic (等离子区) conditions, including ultra-high temperatures of 100 million degrees or so centigrade - a state that refuses to imagine. To meet this challenge, Japanese scientists have come up with their own unique helical device that is particularly safe and is suitable for continuous operation. The large Helical Device now being developed is expected to be completed by the end of next year, with experiments scheduled to start at the beginning of 1998.(10分)21.1 The phrase “artificial sun” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.(2分)A. a man-made sun B. 3. Boxer, philanthropist (慈善家) social activist Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. Considered one of the greatest athletes in boxing history, Ali showed at an early age that he wasn't afraid of any bout—inside or outside of the ring. Growing up in the segregated South, Ali experienced racial prejudice discrimination firsthand, which likely contributed to his early passion for boxing. At the age of 12, Ali discovered his talent for boxing through an odd twist of fate. His bike was stolen, Ali told a police officer, Joe Martin, that he wanted to beat up the thief. "Well, you better learn how to fight before you start challenging people," Martin reportedly told him at the time. Ali became a Golden Gloves champion in 1959, became an Olympic gold medalist the following year. Ali won all of his bouts in the 1960s, the majority of them by knockout. Since his retirement, Ali has devoted much of his time to philanthropy. Muhammad Ali has traveled to numerous countries, including Mexico Morocco, to help out those in need. In 1998, he was chosen to be a United Nations Messenger of Peace because of his work in developing countries. In 2005, Ali received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush. He also opened the Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, that same year. "I am an ordinary man who worked hard to develop the talent I was given," he said. "I believed in myself I believe in the goodness of others," said Ali.
23. I was walking along the deserted main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call. My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA. The street ran parallel to the sea and was joined to it by a number of narrow side streets. Low grey clouds were drifting across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It has rained in the night and water was dripping from the bare trees that lined the street. I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat. There was no sight of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask. I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living creature I saw was a thin frightened cat which was hopelessly sniffing at some empty paper bags that had been dropped outside the fish-and-chip(炸鱼与马铃薯片) shop the night before. Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark alley next to it was the town's only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint. I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that it was already occupied. There was a man inside. He was very fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat and rubber boots. I could not see his face- he was bending forward over the phone with his enormous back pressed against the glass and did not even raise his head at the sound of my approaching footsteps.Discreetly(小心地), I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait my turn. It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red flowing in drops from under the call box door.(10分)23.1 According to the passage, the A(Para. 1) is most probably____.(2分)A. a hotel providing accommodations for traveling motoristB. the local police stationC. a British motoring organization that helps members when their cars break downD. an inquiry office
