22.Emperors are the largest of all penguins — an average bird stands some 45 inches tall. These flightless animals live on the Antarctic ice in the cold surrounding waters. Penguins employ physiological adaptations cooperative behaviors in order to deal with an incredibly harsh environment, where wind chills can reach -60°C.
1. Cultures tend to favor either a past, present, or future orientation with regard to time. A future orientation, a preference for change, is characteristic of American culture. The society encourages people to look to the future rather than to the past. Technological, social, and artistic trends change rapidly and affect people's lifestyles and their relationships.Given this inclination toward change, it is not surprising that tradition plays a limited role in the American culture. Those who try to uphold traditional patterns of living or thought may be seen as rigid or "old-fashioned". In a society where change is so rapid, it is not uncommon for every generation to experience a "generation gap '. Sometimes parents struggle to understand the values of their children. Even religious institutions have had to adapt to contemporary needs of their followers. Folk singers in church services, women religious leaders, slang versions of the Bible, all reflect attempts made by traditional institutions to "keep up with the times".High rates of change, particularly in urban areas, have contributed to a focus on the future rather than the past or present. Some Americans believe that the benefits of the future orientation are achievement and progress which enable them to have a high standard of living. Others believe that high blood pressure and stomach ulcers are the results of such a lifestyle. As individuals in a culture, we all have an intuitive understanding about how time is regulated. Usually we do not think about the concept of time until we interact with others who have a different time orientation. Although individuals from any two cultures may view time similarly, we often sense that in another culture, life seems to proceed at either a slower or faster pace. Knowing how time is regulated, divided, and perceived can provide valuable insights into individuals and their cultures.(5分)1.1 American orientation toward the future might be demonstrated by____.(1分)A. the presence of religious institutionsB. the preference for "old-fashioned" parentsC. the limited role of traditionD. the presence of folk singers in church services

21. The sun sends out huge amounts of energy, not only to Earth, but to all other planets in the solar system and directly into space. The source of all that energy is nuclear fusion (核聚变) occurring at the sun’s core. The Large Helical Device being developed at the Ministry of Educational Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) is essentially an “artificial sun” that aims to reproduce this nuclear fusion on Earth. “Nuclear fusion is a reaction in which nuclei of light atoms such as hydrogen combine to form nuclei of heavier atoms such as helium (氦). If we can utilize the huge amounts of energy released by this reaction, nuclear fusion will then constitute a completely new, clean and never ending source of energy,” says NIFS Director Atsui Iiyoshl. In many respects, fusion is far superior to the various conventional energy sources currently in use. Fusion seems to have tremendous potential as a new source of energy. But to produce fusion reactions on Earth, it is necessary to meet a set of critical plasmatic (等离子区) conditions, including ultra-high temperatures of 100 million degrees or so centigrade - a state that refuses to imagine. To meet this challenge, Japanese scientists have come up with their own unique helical device that is particularly safe and is suitable for continuous operation. The large Helical Device now being developed is expected to be completed by the end of next year, with experiments scheduled to start at the beginning of 1998.(10分)21.1 The phrase “artificial sun” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.(2分)A. a man-made sun B. NIFSC. the sun’s energyD. fusion science
